There is a growing conversation about the pressures of social media and what it does to our well-being and mental health. This signals a cultural shift away from the glossy representations of life on social media. ROOT challenges the human disconnect with nature by rebalancing natural and digital lifestyles through “SLOWcial media”. With ROOT, users have limited online daily interactions, which may increase depending on how much time they spend outdoors, making their interactions more meaningful. The aesthetics for the app are derived from printing inks developed for the project from beetroot and turmeric and take the simple and familiar aspects of our well known social media apps. The interface nods to natural and organic forms, without being overly “earthy”, displaying a contemporary way of promoting the natural world for a digital age.
