Kulsum Hafez
Contemporary Art and Illustration BA(Hons)
I am an artist. My father is a print specialist, and my mother is a seamstress. It feels inevitable that print and fabric form key components of my multi-disciplinary practice.
I’m interested in craft and skill and have a go at trifling with various mediums, which weave their way together in the form of handmade objects and tapestries. My ideas evolve as I put them through different media processes: from drawing, textiles, print, and ceramics.
My magpie eye finds the small, overlooked mundane moments which go unnoticed, turning them into playful, eccentric, intimate yet universal moments of connection. I am fascinated by the joy of seeing what others miss and creating ways to highlight the unseen.
My work pays homage to my upbringing and threads together themes of family, connection, and the importance of community. I feel my work highlights the joys of being alive, and it is a way to share my secrets for living a wholesome and meaningful life.
