Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

My Final Major Project is an adaptation of ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl, for modern day children’s theatre. I chose to take my designs for two costumes; Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa, through to construction, this gave me a variety of textiles and construction methods to explore.
The fantasy story has no specific setting, so this has allowed me to explore various themes and issues around the text more freely. I chose to base my silhouette on the Victorian period however, I modernised the silhouette using sweets and chocolate to influence the colour, shape and texture of the costumes.
Throughout the process of design and make I explored many different textile techniques including digital printing, smocking, bead-work, and sublimation printing.
I have improved and developed my skills greatly over four years at University: within design, textiles, and construction, as well as confidence within myself. My placement year working with; CBeebies, Beamish Museum, Enchanted Entertainment, The Theatre Royal, as well in the bridal industry and joining a touring show, has helped to prepare me for my final year and for moving into the industry beyond University.
