My aim within my Final Major Project was to choose a text which would provide a challenge that would enable me to further expand my creative design processes.
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl is a Children’s fiction story that afforded me with the opportunity to design and create costumes for both human and non-human forms; for James and his travelling insect companions. I developed two sets of designs for two different genres; a family film production set in the 1950’s and a contemporary carnival parade for fun family entertainment.
I researched modern fashion designers, sculpture, and architecture, which inspired my ideas for the shapes and silhouettes of each character's costume.
I used collage to experiment with ideas for exaggerated silhouette and form, scale, and colour palettes, before going on to further develop my concepts towards wearable costumes.
I really enjoyed the imaginative possibilities for costume creations that this project opened-up to me. I intend to go on and further develop my creative skills through further academic study.
