My passion for fashion history brought me to the University of Huddersfield to study Costume with Textiles; my goal was to keep the historical aesthetic throughout the assignments whilst maintaining some creative liberties with the designs.
I am presenting pictures of my first-year project, an 1830’s orange costume inspired by the Brontë sisters and their works: a poetic combination of romanticism and feminism.
In second year I worked on an 1890’s red and black costume for Lucy Westenra, a character in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The garments are a combination of Victorian taste, including a William Morris inspired belt, and colours that represent life, passion, and death.
In final year I created two Puritan costumes inspired by The Scarlet Letter. I made a replica of a 17th Century corset working from historical patterns. It was important for me to highlight this story’s hidden message through my design: to portray an independent, strong woman; a feminist of her time.
Included here are costumes I made while I was studying to expand and enrich my portfolio. I am one of the founders of “The Seamstress of Rohan”, with Maite Piza. I hope to create costumes for period productions on stage or screen.
