Maia Rogerson
Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)
I designed and created costumes for a children’s ballet version of ‘The Wind in the Willows’, written by Kenneth Grahame, set in the original Edwardian period. I was interested to explore the clothing of characters’ belonging to different class systems in the early 20th century.
I changed some of the characters to women as it is a male dominated story and I felt this would allow an audience to see the characters in a new way. I wanted to challenge myself and make costumes for both a man and a woman, and to create animal head pieces.
I loved creating the textile prints using my own photographs of nature. For Ratty’s character I used water imagery to portray his calm and relaxing personality. For Toad’s character I used a bold print of an aquatic plant to demonstrate her boastful character.
I have experience working in a range of costume roles, from dressing on panto at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, to costume maintenance and alterations in the film industry. I love that each job in the costume industry is different, allowing me to continue to learn new things and to challenge myself. I am excited to begin my career!
