Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

I have elected to focus on design and construction for final year. The costumes for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore, were created for a futuristic dystopian setting with subtle Victorian influences. I gender swapped each character so that I could present a more female dominated perspective on this story. I created designs for a ballet interpretation of the text. This gave me a wide range of silhouette and styles to experiment with, whilst enabling me to investigate the different ways character is expressed through costume for dance.
My designs for The Percy Jackson Series, by Rick Riordan, are inspired by present day fashion. I looked at everyday styles and combined these with fantasy elements found in high couture fashion. I designed these costumes for film as I believed I could translate the story more effectively for this performance mode. This text, with its inclusion of gods, demigods, and human characters, enabled me to explore ways to communicate social class and hierarchy through costume. I aimed to fully express each character through the creation of Greek inspired digital patterns and considered colour palettes.
