Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

My Final Major Project is an adaptation for theatre of ‘The Last Unicorn’ by Peter S Beagle.  My influences were patterns and textures found in nature, and medieval fashion. Additionally, elements with strong connotations to the characters e.g. fire for the Red Bull, created individuality. I explored puppetry to portray non-human roles and wanted to achieve coherence between the performers costumes and their puppets.

I enjoy all areas of costume, but my passion lies within construction. I gained valuable experience through the challenges of using unfamiliar fabrics and dyeing techniques for the Schmendrick and Unicorn designs.

The selected text in second year was Dracula by Bram Stoker. I constructed a costume for Dracula, consisting of an under-bust corset, waistcoat, trousers, jacket, cravat, spats and I carved a walking cane.

In my placement year I experienced different aspects of the industry; wardrobe assistant at York Theatre Royal, helper at costume hire shop Dress Circle, design assistant at Something Wicked, a maker at Hat Therapy, and I was freelance costume maker for Ebor Players pantomime.

I have had a wide experience in design, textiles and construction during my degree and I’m looking forward to a future in the costume industry.
