Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

For my final major project I created theatre costumes based on my designs for the characters of Puck and Peaseblossom from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The idea of creating costume for two magical fairy characters gave me a unique challenge to build upon my existing textiles and construction skills and knowledge, and explore a new area of prop costume to create wing structures for both characters. Throughout my final year I have been heavily inspired by the natural forest environment that the story of a Midsummer Night’s Dream takes place in, this has been reflected in the textiles work I have created exploring the concept of natural textures. Exploring the idea of nature has allowed me to create two distinct characters with soft delicate florals for Peaseblossom and earthy camouflaged textural embroidery for Puck. Over the course of my degree I have developed a passion for hand embroidery, during my placement year I took embroidery classes to refine my skill and was excited to bring this into my final major project.
