Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)
For my final major project, I chose to construct two costumes of my own design based on the first two novels of the Caraval Trilogy by Stephanie Garber. I chose to design and construct my costumes for high-end film, as this is the industry I would like to work in post-graduation. This allowed me to work on the smaller details that would not be seen if on stage.
Throughout the year I have focused my research on portraying emotion within costume with a strong focus on colour as this theme runs throughout the trilogy. As the fantasy novels are set in a fictional world, I chose to take influence from the Edwardian Era and 1950s high-end fashion with hints to venetian architecture for the non-human characters.
The two costumes I made were Scarlett Dragna and The Poisoner. I thoroughly enjoyed the process, experimentation and textiles printing when making the costumes. Unlike my usual approach to textiles these two costumes have been hand dyed and screen printed with the body of Scarlett’s skirt being hand-dyed devoré velvet.
For my second year, I created a costume for Professor Van Helsing based on my own design merging traditional Victorian menswear with experimental features.
