Costume with Textiles BA(Hons)

For my Final Major Project, I chose Liz Braswell’s A Tale as Old as Time, a darker retelling of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. For this project, I wanted to incorporate 18th-century French fashion and fantasy elements into my costumes. I did this by starting with a traditional silhouette and expanding it to suit my chosen characters. It was exciting to explore men's costumes as it wasn’t something I’d had previous experience with. Still, it was exciting to see the costume come together. During this project, I found a love for textiles I hadn’t previously had from exploring more smocking techniques and print techniques I am unfamiliar with. I enjoyed finding the right shade of blue for dying my fabric and creating a screen print that interlocks perfectly with my character's waistcoat. I also enjoyed taking my smocking further by incorporating wires to continue the effect of the smocking into 3D pieces as well as exploring the Amaya embroidery machines further, as I find it interesting to build up a digital file. Overall, my FMP has shown me more areas of costume that I want to explore further in my costume-making career.
