Sumera Saleem
Fashion Design with Textiles BA(Hons)
I am a final year Fashion and Design with Textiles student specialising in menswear; my graduate collection juxtaposes the traditional methods of tailoring with the futurism of space travel.
Space Travel has long been a source of inspiration to the fashion industry; the 1960’s space race heavily influenced designers to create more sculptural and streamlined looks; for example, Paco Robanne, and Andre Courreges. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the interest in space travel still continues. 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the world’s first moon landing; this event and other recent space exhibitions influenced my astronomical exploration.
Contemporary men's tailoring is a specific interest of mine, I secured an invaluable year’s placement at Owen Scott bespoke Tailors; this experience helped me understand the construction of tailored garments and style influences.
My collection integrates both advanced high-tech fabrics and suiting cloths, as well as picking out functional elements inspired by my research of flight suits, which I have translated into traditional tailored designs. Digital embroidery emphasises dynamic lines and bold silhouettes. This capsule collection comprises outerwear, boiler suits, shirts and trousers.
