How both we and others view our bodies has a lot of influence over how we see ourselves. With the rise of social media, it is easier than ever to compare ourselves to other people and put ourselves and our bodies down. However, the body is a unique thing, and the lengths it can be pushed to are extreme. With my collection ‘Contorted Perfection’, I focus on the extremes our bodies can go to. It compares how versatile the human body is by looking at extreme contortion, which must be practiced and maintained, and then viewing extreme skin imperfections which we cannot control. The collection aims to celebrate people’s differences and raise awareness for skin imperfections that are often hidden. By viewing these imperfections as an addition of beauty, the collection has developed a strong focus on Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold, and the values this holds.
