Living for Another

This work is a series of images presenting an authored narrative of motherhood. Eileithyia, the stand-alone photograph aims to form an understanding of the experience a first-time mother encounters. Exploring emotions and isolating pressures that surround a mother when the reality of another life, solely dependent on her, shifts her main focus from herself to the baby. The muslin material ties the mother to the baby, presenting a sheer depiction of herself. By demonstrating the universal conventions of motherhood, I sequenced my book responding to the conversations held with the mothers, narrating their real experiences which may challenge the usual conventions. On location with the use of available light, I combined a variety of photographic genres to visually encapsulate the unexplainable journey of becoming a parent.
